Annette Funicello had just turned 13 when Walt Disney, the studio's head of production, saw her dancing in an Fullerton California amateur Swan Lake. The Funicello's Mickey Mouse Club teammates were furious when Funicello was added to her group later in season 1 of the show, without needing to be auditioned for.
